What are we protecting when we build walls? We are protecting our fire, passion and relationship with God. True Christianity is not about just coming to church. We come to be redirected to God. This is just an igniting place for me to get passionate for God.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Proverbs 1:7 (ESV)
The first brick we should lay to begin building our wall is this brick – the fear of the Lord. For this first brick to be laid correctly, it needs to be accompanied by the second brick, the Biblical understanding of grace. Why? Because rules without relationship leads to rebellion and relationship without rules lead to sin.
“The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant.” Psalms 25:14 (ESV)
The fear of the Lord is one of the keys to intimacy with Him.
What is the fear of the Lord?
- The assurance that God is watching
- The certainty that God is responding to what He sees
- The promise that secrets will be exposed
In short, it is the continual awareness that I am in the presence of a holy God who knows it all! To fear the Lord is to take Him seriously.
