The day has been a rush – a rush to grab your backpack, to put your shoes on and you are almost late. Just when you think you are ready to go, you realise you are missing the most important thing. The key.

Life can be like that. There is never enough time, things are in a mess and when you finally think you are ready, you can’t find the key.

So you spend your time searching for the key. You waste time, you waste effort, and you even search in the same spot a few times. In frustration you whisper, “Jesus, show me where the key is. I am desperate.” Then you reach into your bag and there it is. You found the key.

Throughout humanity, people have been looking for keys – the key to eternal youth, the key to happiness, the key to wealth, the key to peace. We are constantly searching in our own strength but there is a Key that is not passively waiting for you to find it. There is a Key that is also searching for you, that wants to be found.

That Key is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives us the power to live an overcoming life. It is the Key that unlocks a life with meaning and hope.

Sunday Service 26th May from Tabernacle of Joy on Vimeo.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord…” Jeremiah 29:11-14 (ESV)

The Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit is a promise and gift for all to receive. The Holy Spirit is our comforter, teacher and guide. It is the Spirit of Jesus Christ. However, many believers today are not empowered by the Holy Spirit because they have not received it.

“And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” Acts 19:1-2 (ESV)

How will you know that you have received the Holy Spirit?

The evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues. You will speak in a language you have never been spoken or taught before. This was the supernatural evidence that convinced the Apostles that the Gentiles in Cornelius’ household had received the Holy Spirit in Acts 10.

“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:4 (ESV)

How can you receive the Holy Spirit?

Repent: It is impossible to receive the Holy Ghost without repentance.

Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:38 (NKJV)

Desire: You must want to receive the Holy Spirit. God will not force Holy Spirit on anyone.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
For they shall be filled.” Matthew 5:6 (NKJV)

Faith: Believe that you will receive it!

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV)

Praise: God will inhabit praise (Psalm 22:3).

Focus: Set your mind on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2).

Yield: When you feel the presence of the Holy Spirit, yield your tongue. Stop speaking in your native tongue and allow the Holy Spirit to speak through you (Romans 6:13).

Have you received the gift of the Holy Spirit since you believed? If you would like someone to pray with you and for you to receive the Holy Spirit, please feel free to join us in our church services. (Click here to find out more)
