Putting on Christ for Chinese New Year
More than just new clothes
A popular tradition during Chinese New Year (also known as 春节 or Spring Festival) is to put on new clothes – a gesture that reflects the beginning of spring and the new life that it brings and is thought to bring blessing. Besides putting on new clot,When we put on Christ, there is power for change. Didn’t do so well on your New Year resolutions? Start again this Chinese New Year by putting on Christ.
“But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.” Romans 13:14 (ESV)
When we put on Christ, we are stepping into spring, the season of new life that He has given to us when we are born again and putting the winter of our past life behind us.
“For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” Galatians 3:27 (ESV)
HOW TO PUT ON CHRIST
1. Remember that your old self is dead and has been buried in Christ
“For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Colossians 3:3 (ESV)
What this means: Christ has given us a completely new life. This is not an upgrade, but a change of operating system (OS)! Now that we are a “new OS”, we don’t operate according to the rules of the world, which is what we are used to. We operate according to the ways of God.
2. Think and seek the things of God
“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” Colossians 3:1-2 (ESV)
What this means: Instead of worrying (or negative meditation, in other words), think upon the things of God.
3. Put away sinful behaviour and thinking
“Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” Colossians 3:5 (ESV)
What it means: When your thoughts are set on the things of God, healthy behaviour naturally flows from it. Sin is a false promise of a pleasure that is only temporary. Fixing our thoughts on Him helps fix our sinful behaviour.
